BLAST FROM THE PAST: JOHN COLTRANE QUARTET
If you search "jazz" in youtube, the highest viewed clip that is actually related to the music is John Coltrane and his quartet of McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones and Jimmy Garrison playing "Alabama" on Jazz Casual. Timeless music.
It is an incredible composition. I have lived in Alabama all my life and it is difficult to match the beauty of the music to the tragedy that inspired it. The song was first recorded November 18, 1963, about two months after the church bombing that killed four girls at the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham. The first original issue of this song was on Impulse A(S) 50, Coltrane Live at Birdland.
